Discovering Canberra’s little gems

Want to live close to local shops offering everything from great local cafes and restaurants, through to a local supermarket and a range of professional services? Then look no further than On Forbes in Turner.

One of the best things about Canberra is that you’re never far away from a small pocket of serenity or an expansive view. In fact, it’s only a short stroll from On Forbes and the Northbourne Avenue light rail corridor to find parks and greenery, great places to dine, and some of the best coffee in Canberra.

One such oasis can be found at the O’Connor shops, only a 15-minute stroll or an even shorter bike ride from On Forbes. Established deciduous trees provide dappled shade and the scent of the country, while also providing everything you need from a local IGA supermarket with a well-stocked deli counter, a chemist, a hairdresser and post office. You can also find professional services including a local legal firm, a dentist and a number of local businesses providing complementary medical services including an osteopath and physiotherapists. And if you don’t want to use one of the BYKKO ebikes available for residents at On Forbes, then you’ll want to take a look at Bike Culture, which has become a local institution for all your cycling needs including sales and servicing.

But, back to the coffee. The search for Canberra’s top brew needs to include 39Steps, an eclectic friendly place with a vintage inspired theme and a dedicated team of baristas. The breakfast menu includes everything from the traditional big brekky, through to salmon tarts, toasted honey muesli and the perennial crowd pleaser, egg and bacon rolls. The dinner menu is hearty and tasty, with pizzas a mainstay.

Another find is Tu Do Vietnamese Restaurant, which is always busy and considered to be one of Canberra’s best – on the list for any pho aficionado. For takeaway fish, chips and burgers (and more coffee) try Flatheads, a newly renovated café with a great atmosphere and full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner, open until late.

And if you’re looking for a great night out, as well as tantalising breakfast and lunch menus, then you’ll want to check out The Duxton, a local pub and function venue offering cocktails, dining, take away snacks, live entertainment, sport and even the odd pool party. Winner of the Australian Hotels Association ACT Award in 2017 for best new venue, it’s a great meeting place for locals and visitors alike.

With all of this in close proximity from your front door at On Forbes, O’Connor shops has all the ingredients to become your treasured local.
