Just your jam: live music around On Forbes

There is something very soul-satisfying about listening to live music. The perfect backdrop to a Sunday afternoon beverage with friends to close off the weekend, or a welcome pause on a weeknight to be enveloped in tunes, the authenticity of live music being played right there in front of you awakens the spirit.

On Forbes is primely positioned to take full advantage of some of Canberra’s best live music venues… and are best enjoyed with a glass of local wine in hand.

Edgars Inn
1 Edgar St, Ainslie ACT 2602
Live music Sundays from 4pm

In the middle of the leafy suburb of Ainslie occupying a corner of the local shops, Edgar’s Inn has the perfect live music vibes every Sunday from 4pm. Dappled light shines through the trees and pot plants lining the outdoor terrace, and the strumming of guitar fills the space with a carefree and cheerful ambience. Tables are full of friends catching up for an afternoon over a cooling beverage, slices of wood-fired pizza and good dose of chitchat.

Old Canberra Inn
195 Mouat St, Lyneham ACT 2602
Live music Wednesdays from 6pm and Sundays from 4pm

Just as the name suggests, Old Canberra Inn has all the historical charm of a post-colonial pub. Built in 1857, the cosy inn has become something of an icon and an attractive destination for craft beers, pub food and live music. Wisteria winds its way around the beer gardens that are a delightful place to listen to the summer sessions on Sunday afternoons from 4pm, perhaps with a game of darts thrown in. Guitar covers of songs may have you humming along without you even realising. If the smooth vibes of jazz music are more your style, then head to Old Canberra Inn on Wednesday evenings, where they have live jazz from 6pm.

Smith’s Alternative Bookshop
76 Alinga St, Canberra ACT 2601
Live music most evenings. Check schedule online.

Nestled in the city in the historic Melbourne building, Smith’s Alternative Bookshop offers live music and entertainment as eclectic as the couches and armchairs out the front. During the week the live music calendar includes experimental nights, classical evenings, ‘Old Timey’ Tuesdays every fortnight as well as jazz, while on Sunday afternoons smooth jazz tunes can be heard drifting down the street. Whichever session you end up at, a beer or glass of wine accompanied by some spiced nuts makes for the ideal live music experience.
