Bykko e-bike Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Electric Bicycle or e-Bike?
This is a bicycle that can be powered both by human power and electrical power. Our electric bikes are “pedal assist” or “Pedelec”. Pedal assist mode on electric bicycles means that the bicycle’s electric motor only operates while you are pedalling. So, yes, you do have to pedal, however you can choose how hard or how easy you want your ride to be. They are great fun to ride and are easy to use, and the pedal assist feature opens up the world of cycling to some of those previously unable to participate.
What is the battery range of the Bykko e-Bike?
The average battery range is 60-70 km depending on the level of usage. The electronic display on the bike’s handlebar shows the battery charge level and the maximum distance you can ride on that battery range. The battery is recharged every time the bike is docked back at the docking station. However, if the battery goes flat, you can still use the bike as a normal push bike.
How does Bykko electric bike work?
All our e-bikes are fully automated so when you unlock the bike from the bike dock, the screen will come to life. Now your bike is ready to ‘ride electric’. To make your bike work, pedal! Your pedalling activates a sensor which turns the motor on. There are a couple of things to be aware of. If you are riding downhill and stop pedalling (i.e. Freewheeling) then your motor will stop. Once you get to the bottom and start pedalling again your motor will kick in. If your speed goes above the programmed assistance cut-off point (25km/h as per Australian regulations), your motor will not work until your speed drops below the cut-off point. You can pedal an electric bike as fast as you want, just like you can on a normal bike, but the motor is programmed to stop providing assistance above 25 km/hr speed. If you use your brakes, even slightly, this will stop your motor. This is a safety feature and cannot be disabled or bypassed.
How many Bykko bikes can I hire?
You can hire maximum of two bikes at a time. This can be done in one transaction and you will be charged for each bike. If you need more bikes, simply create a new user account.
How do I change gears on a Bykko e-bike?
Our e-bikes have a thumb/finger shifter system grip with 7 gears (1,2,3…7) on the right hand-side of the handlebar. Hills are where the gears become important. Plan ahead and select a low gear such as gears 1 or 2 so that pedalling uphill is less physically demanding; you can turn your pedals easily and activate your motor; and you don’t place a lot of strain on the motor. The motors have a safety cut off so could stop while going up a hill if overheating. Incorrect gearing is the number one reason for this, so be mindful of this when choosing gears.
How can I lock an e-bike outside the bike station?
If you leave the bicycle unattended at any time for any reason, you are responsible for securing the bicycle using the Steel Cable and Bike Lock on the back wheel to protect against theft of the bicycle. You are also responsible for the electric bike throughout your hire, whether you are riding it or leaving it stationary. Lock your bike to a fixed and strong object, in a visible spot. Pass the steel cable eyelet through the Bike Lock on the back wheel and manually close the Bike Lock. When you return to your bike, Login to your account, press Unlock button and scan the QR code on Bike Lock until the Bike Lock is open and release the Steel Cable. Return the bike to the BYKKO On Forbes bike station and push the bike firmly into the bicycle dock.
Please be aware that your trip ends when the bike is returned to the docking station and correctly locked into the bicycle dock.
Can I use a Bykko e-bike for more than 24 hours continuous usage?
No, the electric bike share service allows you to rent an electric bike for no more than 24 hours in a single journey. The Bykko service is designed for short journeys to ensure that the bikes are available for all to use. Any use of a bicycle exceeding the rental period with 24 hours shall be deemed a loss or theft until such bicycle is found and/or returned to the bicycle station. If a bicycle you rent is damaged, lost, or stolen during the Rental Period, then the credit or debit card or bank account associated with your account will be charged at our sole discretion up to $5,000 per damaged, lost or stolen Bicycle. Prior to charging your credit or debit card or bank account we will attempt to contact you, using the contact information you provided in your account. Please read our Terms and Conditions.
There are no bikes available at the station. What do I do?
You can use our real-time map found on the homepage to check bike availability before planning your trip. Please inform us if you are often in difficulty to find an available bike and we will analyse our options to expand the system.
What happens if my QR scan fails, or I miss the 5 second unlocking window when collecting my e-bike?
If, for whatever reason, you fail to release a bike, simply try again. You will not be charged for the failed attempt. If you can’t use the camera or the QR scan fails, you can select the option to Manually Select Vehicle and enter the dock number located on each dock or select the dock number from the drop-down list.
Do I need to wear a helmet when riding a e-bike?
The ACT Road Rules enforce helmet laws for cyclists of all ages, in all situations, in order to prevent serious injury from crashes. The ACT Road Rules state that a bicycle rider on roads and road-related areas must wear an approved bicycle helmet securely fitted and fastened. Bykko will provide helmets with every bike, however Bykko takes no responsibility if there are no helmets available. Bykko does not take any responsibility for users’ failure to obey the Road Rules, and any consequences this may have.
Are the electric batteries safe?
Our electric bikes are produced by reputable manufacturers using only top-quality Li-Ion polymer cells. Li-Ion Polymer batteries have improved safety; the chargers have fail-safe electronic design and components to prevent overcharging the batteries.
Are the bike seats adjustable?
The bike seats are adjustable and should be fixed to the correct height for you before you start your journey.
Follow the steps below 1. Release lever. 2. Adjust height as required. 3. Push lever back fully to secure the bike seat.
What happens if I choose a bike that is damaged, faulty or unsafe?
If there is anything wrong with your e-bike, simply return it to the dock and report the problem through your smartphone app. You will not be charged for this release. To choose another bike, simple scan the QR code of a new bike.
What happens if I crash, fall, injure myself or damage the e-bike?
If you are injured or involved in a crash and require urgent help, dial Triple Zero (000) immediately. Always seek appropriate medical attention as you deem required. If the bike has been damaged, has malfunctioned or become faulty during the ride, return the bike to the docking station if you are able to do so. Following this, report it as faulty through the smartphone and email Bykko using support@bykko.com.au.
What happens if my Bykko bike is stolen?
You shall immediately report any lost or stolen bicycle to the local Police Station or phone the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. If you promptly report a lost or stolen bicycle to us, file a police report with respect to such loss or theft, and forward Us a copy of such police report within five business days of filing such police report, then we may, in our sole discretion, waive our right to charge you fees for a lost or stolen Bicycle. Any use of a Bicycle exceeding the Rental Period with 24 hours shall be deemed a loss or theft of such Bicycle unless and until such Bicycle is found and/or returned to the Bicycle Station. Please read our Terms and Conditions.
When does my Bykko plan start?
Your plan starts at the date of payment. E.g. If you select a monthly plan, your plan will be valid for 30 days from the date of payment. For the On Forbes residents, the annual plan starts on August 15th , 2019 and it ends on August 15th 2020.
